Annual Report for 2008
Congregational Ministry:
I currently lead a small congregation under the title of Transfiguration Church. Services are held every Sunday evening in the chapel of Queen’s Theological College. The service is best described as reflective and contemplative and includes readings from the Bible or other sacred and inspired writings, a reflection on the day’s theme, a time of quiet meditation, communion, and a sharing of peace. Recorded music is currently used to create a peaceful and reflective atmosphere - sacred music from a variety of styles and traditions. Weekly attendance varies from 6-20 people and attendees range in age from 25 to 75. Most would describe themselves as “spiritual but not religious” and this congregation provides an opportunity for them to gather with like minded people. The theology emphasizes personal transformation and spiritual growth.
Study Groups:
Two study groups were held in 2008 each with 8-10 participants. The first was entitled “Transforming Consciousness” and was based largely on the work of Ken Wilber. Here’s the promo blurb: “Spirituality” has come to include such a vast number of things that one can find oneself overwhelmed and at a real loss to be able to evaluate, process, understand, and discern what is most beneficial for one’s personal and spiritual development. This 5 session program attempts to give participants a much more encompassing overview and map which can enhance and nurture authentic transformation in their lives and in the world we live in.
The second study group was “Inroduction to Centering Prayer” and was an orientation to the practice as described by Fr. Thomas Keating in his book, Open Mind, Open Heart. Participants in this group continue to gather once a week to support one another in this practice
Pastoral Counselling:
I
do a considerable amount of pastoral counseling – most from word of
mouth referrals. Issues have included separation and divorce,
spiritual crisis, and career and life direction.
Weddings and Baptisms:
During 2007, I presided at about 20 weddings. It was a joy to be part of people’s significant life moments. Weddings spanned the spectrum from large elaborate events with 200 guests to small intimate affairs with a handful of guests. All couples were great to work with and the feedback was very positive and appreciative.
Special Event:
In
September, my congregation hosted a special lecture titled “Jesus
in a New Light.” About 50 people from Kingston and area gathered
at the public library for this event. Special guest and keynote
speaker was Swami Vivikenanda Saraswati, head of the Agama yoga
school in Thailand and a recognized authority on the world’s
spiritual traditions. [end]
